What is AI data licensing?

AI data licensing gives a buyer permission to use a defined dataset for an agreed purpose. The agreement determines what can be used, by whom, for how long, and under what conditions.

Start with a specific asset

A useful first conversation describes the asset rather than attaching an export. Think about the work represented: a documented process, a sequence of decisions, or a record of how a problem was resolved. Describe its format, coverage, origin and owner.

That description is an inventory, not a valuation. Buyer demand, quality, rights and preparation requirements all affect whether an opportunity exists.

The license is the product

Before sharing samples, understand the proposed use. Ask who receives access, whether onward licensing is allowed, what retention and deletion mean, and whether the permitted use includes model training, evaluation or derivative datasets. Ask how confidentiality and excluded information will be handled.

An introduction is only the first step

In a referral arrangement, the referrer connects a company with a potential partner. The buyer evaluates the opportunity and the company decides whether to enter an agreement. A referral does not establish acceptance, price or payment timing.

Make a one-page inventory of what exists and who can approve a discussion. Keep raw files in your own systems until the scope and safeguards are agreed.
